Situated on the North side of Roger's Lake, this three-building residential site became the home of an avid rower. The narrow, steeply sloped site was littered with glacial till stone and had little usable space. To create gathering, recreation, and workshop spaces where there were none, stone retaining walls, steps, and terraces were added. An oversized path provides a safe way to carry boats from the upper garage down to the lake-side terrace. Small stones were salvaged from the site and used to fill voids between larger imported stones. Hyper-local granite was used for all new site masonry.
Close collaboration between architects, masons, engineers, and contractors began pre-design and continued throughout construction. A series of plans were used as a framework to establish actual layout and design in the field to ensure graceful alignments with a multitude of existing conditions and constraints. A permitting process approved the construction of a new stone bulkhead wall at the lake, requiring the use of a temporary water wall and a lot of care by the construction team.
